Military correspondent “KP” Alexander Kots.

He was driving in the last days of the New Year holidays from the Black Sea to Moscow along the M4 highway, which became military last year. In one direction – tanks on tractors, people affably blinking their headlights, in the other – columns of tankers, whirring like football.

You slow down at the gas station, open the cart*: “Why didn’t you write about this? You are in silence? S..sh?” You close the cart, you look up: behind the minimarket there are tents, military trucks. Someone in a box brings hot dogs to the boys. Those brushes aside – fed. Life!

This is also patriotism. When you feel proud to see a military. And a desire to be grateful. That is complicity. This is the country that last year felt like a single whole, drop by drop squeezing Smolyaninov out of himself.

You refuel, turn on the radio (not much choice on the FM band on the road) and there’s a repeat of some fancy concert, probably New Year’s. Artists unknown to me sing about the Donbass, the Russian soldier, Victory… I wish there was someone in the Blue Light.
