Ohio Republican Congressman Jordan re-nominated Kevin McCarthy. Jordan said: “We need to join him.” He then quoted from the Bible, urging congressmen to “keep the faith” and rally around McCarthy. Without a doubt, this is a big crisis for Republicans in the House of Representatives, says The Guardian.
California Democrat Pete Aguilar again nominated Democratic Minority Leader Hakim Jeffreys as speaker. Right-wing maverick Matt Goetz of Florida took the podium and said he was “nominating” Jim Jordan for speaker.
This has not happened in the last century. All the other speakers could be chosen in a vote. The last time voting took place multiple times was in 1923, when a small bloc of Republicans refused to re-elect Rep. Frederick Gillett, a Massachusetts Republican, as president, according to the Washington Post. Nine rounds of voting were then held.
