Arkansas continued its amazing run of success in the NCAA Tournament, knocking off top-seeded Kansas 72-71 in a second-round game Saturday at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, Iowa.
The 8-seed Razorbacks advanced to the Sweet 16 with the win. They reached the Elite Eight in each of the previous two NCAA Tournaments.
Davonte Davis led Arkansas with 25 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the field and also added seven rebounds.
The Razorbacks also received 21 points from Ricky Council IV, 10 points from Jordan Walsh and 10 rebounds from Kamani Johnson in a total team effort.
Arkansas trailed most of the game, but tied it up at 55-all on a Davis jumper with 7:01 remaining. Davis’ layup at the 4:14 tied it again at 61 after Kansas had narrowly forged back ahead.
It would be tied two more times down the stretch before the Hogs inched ahead for good, with Council IV hitting a key jumper to tie it at 65 with 1:45 left and Johnson scoring on a layup that gave them a 67-65 lead with 51 seconds left.
Those would be the last field goals of the contest, with the teams trading free throws down the stretch before Council IV sealed the win with a pair of free throws with eight seconds remaining that gave Arkansas a 72-69 lead.
Arkansas improved to 22-13- overall and advances to the Sweet 16 round of the tournament.
Kansas closes out its season with a 28-8 record.
